What to Expect During Your Pet’s Cardiology Evaluation
A veterinary cardiology evaluation is designed to assess your pet’s heart health and provide recommendations tailored to their individual needs. This guide explains what to expect before, during, and after your pet’s cardiology appointment with Veterinary Cardiac Care SD.
Scheduling and Confirmation
Appointment Scheduling: Appointments are scheduled through the participating veterinary clinic hosting your pet’s cardiology evaluation.
Confirmation and History Form: Once confirmed, you’ll receive an email with a link to a medical history form. Please fill this out before the appointment to help us understand your pet’s background.
Pre-Visit Preparation
Calming Your Pet’s Experience: To help reduce anxiety and ensure a comfortable visit, your veterinarian may prescribe pre-visit pharmaceuticals.
Prescription by Your Veterinarian: These medications are recommended by your primary veterinarian and prescribed directly by them.
Food and Water: Your pet does not need to fast and can eat their normal meals that day.
Duration & Drop-Off
Drop-Off and Waiting Time: Pets will be dropped off and usually need to stay at the clinic before and/or after the exam depending on scheduling.
Quick and Comfortable Procedure: The echocardiogram and exam typically take about 15 minutes.
During the Appointment
Comprehensive Cardiac Exam: Dr. Hsu, our board-certified veterinary cardiologist, will perform a detailed cardiac physical examination.
Echocardiogram and ECG: These tests assess heart function and rhythm.
Positioning: Your pet will typically lie on their left and right sides; positioning may vary.
Imaging: Ultrasound gel and alcohol will be applied for better imaging.
No Fur Clipping Required: In 99% of cases, shaving isn’t necessary.
Reviewing the Findings
Consultation with Your Veterinarian: Dr. Hsu reviews the findings directly with your primary care veterinarian.
Detailed Report and Explanation: You’ll receive an emailed summary explaining the findings and any recommended next steps. An optional direct consultation by phone may be possible. Inquire with your vet; an additional fee may apply.
Medications: Any prescriptions are provided by your primary care veterinarian or the veterinary clinic coordinating your visit.
